Swelling management and quality of life
Lymphoedema Rehabilitation
Lymphoedema is assessed in depth, rehabilitation methods that support swelling management are applied, and the goal throughout is improved quality of life.
Lymphoedema is a condition in which lymph fluid accumulates in the tissues, and it can present as swelling in an arm, a leg or elsewhere in the body. Addressing it early makes it considerably easier to manage.
Assessment
The site and degree of the swelling, and its effect on daily life, are assessed in detail. Limb measurements are recorded and repeated at regular intervals so that change can be tracked. Skin integrity and infection risk are part of the assessment too.
The rehabilitation approach
- Manual techniques that support control of the swelling
- Guidance on bandaging and compression garments
- A graded exercise programme appropriate to the region
- Education on skin care and what to watch for day to day
Why continuity matters
Managing lymphoedema is a long-term process, and the person’s active involvement is decisive. A significant part of the programme is therefore devoted to the education and guidance that will let you carry out your own care independently.
For people who have had, or are receiving, oncological treatment, the process is planned in coordination with the doctor overseeing their care.
